Turn Windows Into OSX
By Jeffrey | June 17, 2007

If you’ve followed this blog for a while you’ve probably picked up on the fact that I like to joke a bit at Apple’s expense from time to time.
Let’s face it, when you’re on top you’re the easiest target.
But I have to admit, even though I don’t own a Mac, probably won’t own a Mac anytime in the future, and have major problems with various “features” of them, I absolutely love the UI and interface of OSX.
It’s clean, smooth, and looks good while accomplishing all your tasks. Just like a good wife! *I jest, I jest*
So, for those of you like me that don’t want to lose Windows, but want to experience the visual pleasure of OSX, I’ll show you the easiest way to go about that.
OSX skins have existed for Windows ever since shortly after XP first hit the market. But none have really proven to be 100% accurate in their reproduction.
Button styles differed, colors or design suffered, etc.
Besides that, the icons weren’t replaced, so you’d have to do that separately. Of course, sounds weren’t usually included, so one had to track those down somewhere.
Also, no Mac Dock application would be included in the theme, so you would have to track down one of those, as well.
Before you knew it, you would have downloaded dozens of programs, tried to make them play nicely together, and probably screwed up some major system files in the process.
I know, because I’ve done it.
But here is the program that attempts to solve all those problems in one fell swoop: FlyakiteOSX.
What FlyakiteOSX does, and does well, is make the process of transforming the XP interface into OSX a simple and almost fool-proof practice.
I thought about typing up a guide on how to run through the program, but I found that it wasn’t really necessary. Flyakite is too easy to need one.
It includes the theme, the sounds, the icons, and a couple dock programs to boot. You just select what you want, or select it all, and click Install and it does the job for you.
There are a couple of bugs, though. Sometimes it will keep asking to update system files every time you boot up, and sometimes the sounds keep turning themselves back on after they’ve been disabled.
But for the most part, it does a pretty good job.
The best thing about it is that you don’t even have to track down a real copy of OSX86 patched for mere mortal PCs in order to make the transformation.
Granted, it won’t turn your computer into a real OSX workstation, but it will look that way. And, at least for me, that’s the part that really counts.
One suggestion, though: don’t use the dock programs that come with Flyakite. Instead, download RocketDock. It works much smoother, and looks better too.
When you’re finished, you should be staring at the bliss of something like this:
Enjoy!
