VOTW: Mario 64 With 1 Star In 6:47
By Jeffrey | September 23, 2007
From tasvideos.org:
Ever wonder if Mario was actually a ninja wearing blue overalls? Now you know.
This run completes the game after collecting 1 star. It was originally intended that the player collect a minimum of 70 to finish, but a few bugs allow Mario to pass through doors and barriers that require a minimum number of stars to open. Creating the fastest Super Mario 64 run was previously believed to require 16 stars, but this run manages to glitch through the Dire Dire Docks door without using MIPS the rabbit.
Mario has a very wide range of skills for mobility and some of the physics of this game are easily abused by an experienced player.

Posted by: JungleJim on September 24th, 2007 at 7:39 amumm.. owned the game?
tool-assisted = lame.

Posted by: noo on September 24th, 2007 at 8:09 amMario rules! This was impressive!
Posted by: andy samberg on September 24th, 2007 at 8:14 amexploited . so its not valid.
Posted by: ky on September 24th, 2007 at 8:52 amDude “making a cake” is just so that the 10 yo’s playing the game don’t know that they are actually gonna go make mushroom babies of their own. ;)
Posted by: Aaron on September 24th, 2007 at 8:59 amMario goes through all that and all he gets is a cake. LAME! I’d want more than a cake, hahaha.
Posted by: Brandon on September 24th, 2007 at 9:11 amMeh. You’d think they could make it cooler since they’re using tools.
Posted by: Agreed on September 24th, 2007 at 9:22 amIt’s very unlikely that somebody could make a run with ZERO mistakes, there were moments the guy couldn’t even see where he was going… I think it was a key logger, he saved the best button sequence and deleted the rest.
Posted by: Kal on September 24th, 2007 at 9:53 amI hate people who say that the TAS isn’t valid. To see a game pushed beyond human limits is a beautiful thing. As long as the publisher doesn’t try to pretend that he or she actually ran the game by using a controller, there’s nothing invalid about it. A TAS is not the same as a speedrun, and to watch them with the same mindset is a mistake.
Posted by: Mike on September 24th, 2007 at 9:57 amY dont mario and peach just get a room so he wont have to get beat up all the fuckin time
Posted by: Steven Powell on September 24th, 2007 at 10:13 amCraziest thing I’ve ever seen!
Posted by: CB on September 24th, 2007 at 10:57 amSo “Baking a cake” is what they call it now-a-days.

Posted by: l3v14th4n on September 24th, 2007 at 1:41 pmIt looks fake, there’s a bunch of “glitches” that warp him around the world, and my guess is that the “tool assist” isn’t just a key logger but rather some hacks, which invalidates anything he was trying to prove.
The idea of a tool assist, is simple stuff like save states and flawless runs.
Essentially a TAS should be possibly by anyone just playing the normal game with some trial and error, not something that a person who bought the console and the game can’t do.
Posted by: Kinglink on September 24th, 2007 at 1:47 pmstill awesome
Posted by: mbc on September 24th, 2007 at 2:14 pmThe last glitch he does where he jumps backward up the stairs is in the real game. That being said I think this is a fake. Even speedrunner have small mistakes now and then and some of the he clearly couldn’t see unless he keylogged.
Posted by: RndmGdNck on September 24th, 2007 at 3:27 pmwhats so fake about it? all this stuff is in the real game and can easily be pulled off if you know where to preform at.
Posted by: boon on September 24th, 2007 at 3:33 pmThat was so cool I baked my own cake while watching it…
Posted by: tobias on September 24th, 2007 at 4:41 pmas for the mistakes the start of the video says he had to rerecord it like 8,000 times…
Posted by: Ungo on September 24th, 2007 at 4:48 pmTool assisted speedruns include a tool to slow down the game, and play it frame by frame. He did not use a single hack, only ingame bugs. The glitches used in the game, albeit harder to do, are very possible on an original N64 cartridge. Go ahead and try it, especially:
Posted by: z on September 24th, 2007 at 6:08 pm-the spiral staircase, he jumps up through the ceiling, possibly the easiest
-the staircase reverse jump, do the same jump pushing forward on the first half of the jump, and once you land and from then on hold the joystick to down and hammer at the jump button like a maniac.
You guys are acting as if TAS runs are easy to make. They really, really are not. They require a lot more time and effort to make than regular speed runs.
Posted by: Verz on September 24th, 2007 at 7:29 pmCongrats… Now go outside and maybe get a job.
Posted by: Dave Greiman on September 24th, 2007 at 10:53 pmi bet that other speed record guy is pissed
Posted by: Cert on September 24th, 2007 at 11:37 pmjesus how bored can you get? honestly..
Posted by: ghost on September 25th, 2007 at 2:37 amYes this is very cool and brought back memories, but..
I don’t think he did this with a regular version of the game. At 8:24 on the video clock (8:24 left) he does a super ‘yah-hoo’ jump just from the start. I”m pretty sure it took 3 jumps before you can start doing those, could be wrong
Posted by: blackcracka on September 25th, 2007 at 6:33 pmI’ve done this run before, it took me a while longer, but it is possible, he probably keylogged some of it, but its possible, the backwards staircase at the end was most likely to be keylogged, because its so damn frustrating if you skrew up
Posted by: Anonymous on September 25th, 2007 at 6:51 pmWOW I DINT KNOW THAT WAS EVEN DONE!!!!!!!!!
