If you haven’t seen this awesome movie I definitely recommend you go as soon as you can - yes, it’s that good.

If you’ve already seen the film, you might have missed this little clip near the end when they’re at Coney Island of the huge splash out in the ocean. (Click for larger shot)
And a video clip of the scene, although it’s difficult to make it out clearly.
Some people have speculated that this is the monster itself falling to Earth, but J.J. Abrams has been quoted as saying that the monster had been living deep in the ocean for thousands of years and the splash was a falling satellite that woke it up.
Here is the source story with the quote by J.J. Abrams:
The concept for the monster (affectionately known simply as “Clover†inhouse) is simple, says Abrams. “He’s a baby. He’s brand-new. He’s confused, disoriented and irritable. And he’s been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years.â€Â
Either way, it’s a little bit more info on the origins of the monster.
And finally, if you stayed until after the credits you would have heard this short audio transmission that is hard to make out.
Forward, the clip says “Help Us…”, but reversed it clearly says “It’s Still Alive…”
Hmm…sequel?

This makes sense because you hear HUB talking about what if its from the ocean. He says something along the lines of the ocean is a huge place what if its been living down there for hundreds of years and we didnt even know it. He also said something about finding a new species of fish that they thought was extinct!
Posted by: Phil on January 23rd, 2008 at 6:17 amThat is not a splash, it’s there the entire time the camera is pointed that way. A splash wouldn’t last that long.
Posted by: Mr. Phil on January 24th, 2008 at 7:13 pmThe audio transmission sounds more like they say “they all watched” instead of “help us”
Posted by: Joe M. on January 26th, 2008 at 12:32 amYou can’t see the “splash” at all in this video. You can only see the big ship near the splash.
Posted by: Cccolliiide on February 10th, 2008 at 12:56 pmIt’s not a splash, It’s a boat
Posted by: gazzashoeface on March 24th, 2008 at 4:57 pmokay I just watched a high res version, and watched the ending 12 times, the splash is NOT what the arrow is pointing at, but it IS there, it is slightly to the left of the ship, near the end of the wake, on the very horizon, and it is VERY small, you won’t be able to see it in any youtube video. you won’t be able to see it on a regular (non digital) tv, that was my mistake.
Posted by: Okay on April 6th, 2008 at 8:46 pmJust a correction to Okay’s post, you most certainly can see the splash on non-digtial TVs because I don’t have one and I can clearly see the splash, and the object falling from the sky before it hits the water. I did NOT notice it the first time around, but once you know where (AND WHEN) to look, it’s clear as day, digital TV or not.
